Back-action evading measurement of the collective mode of a Bose-Einstein condensate - In this paper, we investigate theoretically the back-action evadingmeasurement of the collective mode of an interacting atomic Bose-Einsteincondensate (BEC) trapped in an optical cavity which is driven coherently by apump laser with a modulated amplitude. It is shown that for a specified kind ofamplitude modulation of the driving laser, one can measure a generalizedquadrature of the collective mode of the BEC indirectly through the outputcavity field with a negligible backaction noise in the good-cavity eless, the on-resonance added noise of measurement is suppressed belowthe standard quantum limit (SQL) even in the bad cavity limit. Moreover, themeasurement precision can be controlled through the s-wave scattering frequencyof atomic collisions.

Quantum back-action in measurements of zero-point mechanical oscillations - Measurement-induced back action, a direct consequence of the HeisenbergUncertainty Principle, is the defining feature of quantum measurements. We usequantum measurement theory to analyze the recent experiment of Safavi-Naeini etal. [Phys. Rev. Lett. \bf 108, 033602 (2012)], and show that results of thisexperiment not only characterize the zero-point fluctuation of anear-ground-state nanomechanical oscillator, but also demonstrate the existenceof quantum back-action noise --- through correlations that exist betweensensing noise and back-action noise. These correlations arise from the quantumcoherence between the mechanical oscillator and the measuring device, whichbuild up during the measurement process, and are key to improving sensitivitiesbeyond the Standard Quantum Limit.

Thisrandomness translates with time into position uncertainty, thus leading to thewell known uncertainty on the measurement of motion. Here we demonstrate thatthe quantum back action on a macroscopic mechanical oscillator measured in thereference frame of an atomic spin oscillator can be evaded. The collectivequantum measurement on this novel hybrid system of two distant and disparateoscillators is performed with light. The mechanical oscillator is a drum modeof a millimeter size dielectric membrane and the spin oscillator is an atomicensemble in a magnetic field. The spin oriented along the field corresponds toan energetically inverted spin population and realizes an effective negativemass oscillator, while the opposite orientation corresponds to a positive massoscillator.
